Chris Lee
I do seem to have the best job in the world. Go to nice places, sit down for an hour, and enjoy the warmth. Its a good life. Even if I do have to balance on a precarious three legged stool. Lucky for you I can’t intellectualise about my work, I don’t have complex reasons for doing it, and I often don’t know why I draw a certain subject. And do you know what? That doesn’t bother me. I just like the colours, the overlay of man made structures, the accidents of architecture over time.

But I do like my paints, and the papers I use, and the pens, all chosen carefully after years of blots and scratches and nib bending.

Full of ideas, my early working life was spent running an advertising agency in Bath. Now I’m older and almost as idealistic, but no more fast cars and expense account felt tips, no more bossing people about, but I still manage the long lunch hours.

Even then I preferred to scribble out ideas, I used a computer just to lean my presentations against, great big handwritten, badly spelt concept boards. But they seemed to work. 20 years and millions of pounds later I’m often found squatting on my three legged stool squinting up at a large building. Drawing it. That’s what I do.
